Golf, unlike other ball games is not played on a regular playing field. Thus, it is crucial to be able to cope with different terrains and play on different courses. There are typically 18 holes or nine holes on a course. Each hole contains cups which hold the ball. Every hole has a teeing surface to start from and a putting area which contains the cup. There are various standard forms of terrain that lie between the tee area and the green, including the fairway, rough (tall grass), and various hazards, including water, rocks or sand-filled bunkers. Each hole is distinct and is designed in a unique way. Stroke play is the most commonly played form at all levels, especially at the top levels.
