Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a little girl, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good for the school. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
